Ashanti shares a personal story about why voting is so important to her. And it involves a connection to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Get the details, plus Loni Love’s emotional plea to young voters and the ladies on “The Real” do the #MannequinChallenge. More inside…

Today is Election Day!

R&B singer Ashanti joined the ladies on “The Real” today (she’s guest co-hosting all week) to share why voting is so important to her and everyone in her family.

The Grammy Award winner shares that her grandfather was side-by-side next to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the famous march in Selma, Alabama in 1965. She opens up about how her grandfather was beaten as he marched on in an effort to change the laws so African-Americans could have the right to vote.

“My grandfather actually marched with Martin Luther King, [Jr.] and there’s a picture of him that we have in our house,” she shared. “He’s holding his shoes up with holes in them and there’s a whole article. They spat on him. They beat him. And he marched… down Selma for us to have that opportunity, you know what I mean? So that has always been instilled in my entire family. As soon as everyone turned 18, grandpa, go out there and do what you need to do.

Nice!

During today’s show, comedian Loni Love got super emotional as she urges young people to hit the polls. She feels young people take voting for granted and that they don’t truly understand what our ancestors had to go through for us to have that right.

The ladies went out with a BANG joining in on the #MannequinChallenge that’s taking over the Internet. Peep their rendition above.
