Who Is You're So Vain About

Finally! After four decades of mystery, Carly Simon has answered one of music’s biggest questions: who is her hit, ‘You’re So Vain,’ really about? Amazingly, the person Carly named is one of the biggest stars ever!

What lies in the Bermuda Triangle? Have been visited by alien life? Is Kanye West, 38, is really running for president? These questions pale in comparison to the one mystery that has plagued the minds of people everywhere: Who is Carly Simon, 70, singing about in “You’re So Vain”? After much debate and discussion, Carly has revealed the answer — and the truth is shocking!

“I have confirmed,” Carly told People magazine in an interview as a preview of her upcoming memoir, Boys in the Trees, “that the second verse is [about] Warren Beatty.” WOW. Carly’s song is about the Oscar and Golden Globe winning, Hollywood legend? Well, part of it, at least. Still — that’s unbelievable!

During the second verse of “You’re So Vain,” she sings that Warren “had me several years ago when I was still quite naïve,” and that he said “we made such a pretty pair.” Interesting. Carly also sang that Warren “would never leave,” but he “gave away the things you loved and one of them was me.” Awww. How sad! When asked if Warren knew that the verse was about him, Carly told People, “Warren thinks the whole [song] is about him!” Hilarious.

Carly’s song was released in 1972, and it took only five weeks to skyrocket to the top of the US charts, staying at No. 1 for the first three weeks of 1973. The song was also a number one hit in Canada and Australia, while it reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 4 in Ireland. Carly didn’t divulge who the song was about, leading many to speculate if it was dedicated to her ex-boyfriends Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson or Cat Stevens.

Wait, there are two other verses in the song. Who are those lyrics about? Was she shading her then-husband, James Taylor? There are still questions and Carly’s not giving out any more answers. When asked if Carly will reveal the men who inspired those other lyrics, she said “I don’t think so – at least until they know it’s about them.”

If you want to do your own sleuthing into Carly’s history, you can pick up her musical collection “Songs From The Trees” and maybe solve the mystery yourself. Perhaps you’ll find out who Carly’s singing about in the other lyrics?
