Victory! Liberal Party candidate Justin Trudeau has triumphed in Canada’s national elections and is the country’s new Prime Minister. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who served as Prime Minister for over 15 years!

It was a tight race, but ultimately Justin Trudeau, 42, the leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, emerged victorious in a tight, three way battle to be the Canadian Prime Minister. Trudeau triumphed over Stephen Harper, 56, of the Conservative Party, who had first assumed office on Feb. 6, 2006.

The race was a statistical dead heat for much of it’s 78 day duration, however Trudeau was seen to be pulling away from his rivals over the last week of the race. The incoming Prime Minister proved himself to be a relentless campaigner, with over 125 official campaign visits jammed into an election race that lasted just over two months. His rise in Canadian politics has been meteoric as he began his career as a teacher and only won his first political position in 2007, leading many to compare him to President Barack Obama, 54, who also had a relatively brief political career before ascending to the White House.

When Justin was born in 1971, his father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, was just beginning his own term as Canada’s Prime Minister. The elder Trudeau was a beloved figure in Canadian politics. He capitalized on a frenzy among younger voters when he was first elected in 1968 and served two terms, the first from 1968 to 1979 and the second from 1980 to 1984. Justin’s policies will include an effort to legalize marijuana, increase taxes on Canadians making over $ 200,000 and increase infrastructure spending.
