One Direction played their first UK gig as a four-piece last night, following the departure of Zayn Malik in March.

But before they had even set foot on stage, certain members of the crowd at the Millenium Stadium, Cardiff, were heard booing when Malik’s face appeared on a pre-concert video.

On the first night of 1D’s ‘On The Road Again’ tour, an advert for the group’s You And I perfume, recorded before Zayn’s departure, flashed up on screen. It provoked a negative reaction from some.

Telegraph critic Neil McCormick gave the show itself five stars, claiming it was business as usual for the all-conquering boyband. But most of the reaction to the gig on social media has focused on the Zayn video.

Malik quit the band earlier this year saying he wished to live like “a normal 22-year-old”, adding that he wanted to have “some private time out of the spotlight”.

Some One Direction fans feel Zayn’s actions were a betrayal. Countless others, however, have leapt to his defence on Twitter, criticising last night’s boos.
