Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known mononymously as Selena, was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, businesswoman, model, actress, and fashion designer. Referred to as the “Queen of Tejano Music,” her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century.
Early Life and Background
Selena was born in Lake Jackson, Texas, to Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Marcella Ofelia Quintanilla. She was the youngest of three children. Her father noticed her musical talent when she was six years old, and she began performing with her siblings in the family band, Selena y Los Dinos. The family faced financial difficulties, which led them to move to Corpus Christi, Texas, where they opened a restaurant and performed to support themselves.
Music Career
Selena’s music career began in earnest when she signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Her debut album, “Selena,” was released the same year. She gained widespread recognition with her 1992 album “Entre a Mi Mundo,” which included the hit single “Como La Flor.” Her 1994 album “Amor Prohibido” further solidified her status as a leading artist in Tejano music, featuring hits like “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” and “No Me Queda Más.”
Selena’s crossover into the English-language market was marked by the release of her posthumous album “Dreaming of You” in 1995, which included the title track and “I Could Fall in Love.” The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, making Selena the first Latin artist to achieve this feat.
Acting and Business Ventures
In addition to her music career, Selena ventured into acting and business. She appeared in the 1994 film “Don Juan DeMarco” and had plans to star in a biographical film about her life. Selena also launched her own clothing line and opened two boutiques, Selena Etc., in Texas.
Personal Life
Selena married Chris Pérez, the guitarist for Selena y Los Dinos, in 1992. The couple faced opposition from Selena’s father but eventually gained his approval. Selena was known for her philanthropic efforts and involvement in her community.
Tragic Death
On March 31, 1995, Selena was tragically murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club and manager of her boutiques. Selena was shot at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, and died from her injuries at the age of 23. Her death shocked the music industry and her fans worldwide.
