Overview James David “J.D.” Vance (born August 2, 1984) is an American politician, attorney, author, and venture capitalist. He gained prominence with his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy” and is currently the Vice President-elect of the United States, set to assume office on January 20, 2025.

Early Life J.D. Vance was born James Donald Bowman in Middletown, Ohio. His parents, Don and Bev Bowman, divorced when he was young, and he was primarily raised by his maternal grandparents. Vance’s family has Scots-Irish roots, and he grew up in a working-class environment in the Rust Belt, experiencing the economic and social challenges of the region.

Education and Military Service After graduating from Middletown High School in 2003, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a military journalist during the Iraq War. He later attended Ohio State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy in 2009. Vance then pursued a law degree at Yale Law School, graduating in 2013.

Career Vance began his professional career as a corporate lawyer before transitioning to the tech industry as a venture capitalist. In 2016, he published his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” which detailed his family’s struggles and the broader issues facing the white working class in America. The book became a bestseller and was adapted into a film in 2020.

Political Career Initially a critic of Donald Trump, Vance later became a strong supporter. In 2022, he was elected as a U.S. Senator from Ohio, defeating Democratic nominee Tim Ryan. In 2024, Trump selected Vance as his running mate for the presidential election, and they won the election, making Vance the Vice President-elect.

Political Positions Vance is known for his conservative and populist views. He opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and gun control, and is critical of American military aid to Ukraine. Vance has also expressed concerns about childlessness and has been influenced by Catholic theology in his sociopolitical positions.

Personal Life Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri, and they have three children. The family resides in Ohio.
